My last post was on how the lock down has affected our mental health. In this post, I hope to give you some ways to help reduce the effects of stress and anxiety. As always, if you find this article helpful, then please share as it could come to help somebody who really needs it.
One of the best practices to help you lower your stress and anxiety is to start writing. Buy yourself a journal specifically for this purpose. It becomes a medium for your mind to let go.
There are two ways that you can journal:
Write down what you are feeling:
This is the most simplest way to express whatever it is you are feeling. It allows your mind and heart to “unload” on that piece of paper. The KEY is that once you write down your thoughts and feelings – you close your journal and DO NOT READ IT AGAIN. Remember- it is only a medium for you to unload.
Write down what you feel Gratitude for:
Sometimes to help reduce your stress and anxiety, it is important to remember what you are grateful for in life. You can make a GRATITUDE JOURNAL and make your mind reverse the negative feelings into positive ones.
A study done by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health stated that running or exercising for 15 minutes a day reduces the risk of major depression by 26%. Exercising during depression has known to promote the patterns of feeling calm and positive. Exercise increases the production of endorphins which in turn makes you feel good. Not to mention it will give you better night’s sleep.
Exercise also helps you to distract your mind especially during Covid-19 lock down. It makes you feel fresh and re-charges your mind to focus elsewhere when you are done. Like I mentioned above, the production of endorphins releases the stress hormones that make you feel stressed.
Aromatherapy has been around for a long time. The term “aromatherapy” was coined by a French perfumer and chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé in a book he wrote on the topic that was published in 1937. He had previously discovered the healing potential of Lavender in treating burns.
Aromatherapy works using diffusers, aromatic spritzers, bathing salts, body oils, creams, facial steamers to name a few.
The benefits include: reducing stress, agitation and anxiety, manage pain and improve sleep quality.
