4 AFFECTS OF THE LOCK DOWN ON OUR MENTAL HEALTH

SOCIAL ISOLATION:

Social Isolation led to the feelings of depression during this pandemic. If you are an individual who was going to the office every day or the mother who was busy taking her children to after-school activities – we all felt the effects. Imagine not interacting with your colleagues or chit-chatting with friends over a coffee? We are emotional beings and when the lock-downs happened, this critical part that keeps our mental health intact was taken away. Not only that, we were told to stay away from our parents; and grandparents lost interactions with their grandchildren. The society came to a standstill. Everyone locked within the four walls of their home.

The social isolation indirectly affects our relationships within the household. You might see irritability, anger, sadness, anxiety or other range of emotions in your partner. When you are not able to meet anyone, there is not much to talk about with each other- unfortunately (again a harsh truth). There is only so much you can talk – about work or what you saw in the news or what your children did.

ANGER:

People can feel anger as an accumulation factor for all of the above feelings that they are going through. It starts with a feeling a resentment towards Covid-19, the way it was handled and any numerous number of things. You might lash out seemingly otherwise normal situations that would not even elicit a response. This anger can also be misdirected towards your partner- which again boils down to living in close proximity to each other.

With someone who has lost their job, the anger is a way to relieve the sadness and frustrations of the situation that is out their control.

SUMMARY:

These are the most common reactions that you could be going through. My goal, again with this article is to help you categorize what you are feeling. My next article will deal with how you can manage some of these feelings, so look out for that post!

If you liked this article and feel that it will be beneficial to someone, then please share this article. I would also like to receive feedback on what you thought about it and if you found it helpful.
